A Very Merry Table: Five Common Table Setting Mistakes to Avoid

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

Hosting a dinner party this holiday season? Avoid these common table setting mistakes and here's what to do instead.

Festive table setting for a holiday meal.

1. The Overdone Centerpiece

Although a centerpiece may be beautiful, if it's too tall or large, it may inhibit the guests' ability to see and converse with their table mates. Instead, opt for a centerpiece that is low. Festive and functional is the way to go!

2. Oversetting the Table

Keep the table setting simple and only include items that are necessary for the meal. A clutter-free table is more aesthetically pleasing. So, if you are not serving a salad, there is no need to include a salad fork at the place setting.

3. Incorrect Silverware Placement

Here's a tip to remember where the silverware should be placed. "Fork" and "left" each have four letters, so the fork is to the left of the plate. "Knife," "spoon" and "right" each have five letters, so the knife and spoon are to the right of the plate.

4. Knife Facing Wrong Direction

The blade of the knife should face the plate.

5. Bread Plate on the Right Side

The bread plate is set in the top left corner of the table setting, immediately above the forks.

By being aware of these common mistakes, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable dining experience for both you and your guests. Remember, the key is to strike a balance between thoughtful preparation and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Happy hosting!
